Every winter, hundreds of humpback whales migrate to Banderas Bay to breed and give birth. Witnessing a 40-ton whale breach out of the ocean just meters from your boat is something you never forget.
Every November, something extraordinary happens in Banderas Bay. Hundreds of humpback whales — some weighing up to 40 tons — begin arriving from their feeding grounds in Alaska and Canada, drawn by the bay's warm, protected waters. They come to breed, to give birth, and to nurse their calves in one of the most spectacular wildlife gatherings on the Pacific coast of the Americas. Banderas Bay is uniquely suited for whale watching. Its size — 40km across and 1,800 meters deep — provides the space and depth that humpbacks need, while its protected geography keeps seas calm enough for comfortable viewing. From November through March, sightings are virtually guaranteed. You'll witness behaviors that few people ever see in the wild: breaching, tail slapping, pec fin waving, and if you're lucky, a mother nursing her newborn calf just meters from the boat.
We guarantee whale sightings or your next tour is free. In 10+ years, we've never had to honor this guarantee.

Humpback whales arrive in Banderas Bay from mid-November and the season peaks in January and February, with the last whales typically departing by late March. The peak months (December–February) offer the highest concentration of whales and the most dramatic behaviors, including competitive groups of males competing for females and mothers with newborn calves.
Tours depart from Marina Vallarta at 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The boat heads into Banderas Bay, where our guides use their knowledge of whale behavior and current sighting reports to locate the animals. Once whales are spotted, the captain positions the boat at a respectful distance while the guide narrates the behavior. Most tours encounter multiple whale groups. The return journey often includes dolphin sightings.
We are committed to responsible whale watching that prioritizes the animals' wellbeing. We follow all Mexican marine regulations regarding approach distances and behavior around whales. We never chase, harass, or surround whales. Our guides are trained to read whale behavior and will move the boat away if animals show signs of stress. We contribute to ongoing humpback whale research in Banderas Bay.
Wear layers — mornings on the water can be cool even in winter. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. A camera with a zoom lens will capture better photos than a phone. Binoculars are helpful for spotting distant whales. Motion sickness medication is recommended if you're sensitive — take it 1 hour before departure. Most importantly: be patient and present. The moments when a whale breaches are sudden and spectacular.
